Detective Comics #1100

DC Comics released Detective Comics #1100 yesterday. The oversized issue contains four stories with the first one featuring Batman teaming up with Ace the Bat Hound. Joker and Robin appear briefly in other stories. Here's the official summary:

"In March 1937, a comic book was published that changed the world as we know it. Now, 1,099 issues later, some of comics’ top talents have gathered to celebrate the comic that birthed a legend! Tom Taylor and Mikel Janín join forces once again to tell a heartfelt and action-packed story of Batman rescuing a young boy’s best friend. Greg Rucka and Álvaro Martínez Bueno team up for a tale that asks the question: was Gotham better off before Batman? Mariko Tamaki reunites with Detective Comics collaborator Amancay Nahuelpan for a yarn that explores Bruce Wayne’s world outside of the cowl and how his double life as Batman intersects with his alter ego’s actions. Dan Watters and legendary artist Bill Sienkiewicz bring us a story that illustrates just how similar Batman’s motivations are to the criminals he has sworn to fight and how he fights against his own darkness."

Hot Wheels Premium Pop Culture First Batmobile

I was surprised to find this Hot Wheels Premium Pop Culture First Batmobile last week at the local Walmart's. It's based on the bright red convertible that was first referred to as the Batmobile in Detective Comics #48 even though a slightly different version appeared in Detective Comics #27. It cost a little bit more since it's a premium edition and it's all metal. There were only two of them on the peg but I only picked one up.

Gothtopia Biker Batman and Catbird from Detective #27

There are several reasons why you should pick up and read Detective Comics #27 (March 2014) and the start of Gothtopia is just one. Where else are you going to see biker Batman and Catbird aka Catwoman riding their batcycle and catcycle?

Vintage DC Comics 2010 Calendar

I managed to snag me a Vintage DC Comics 2010 Calender from Swag Bucks. I know the year is over but there are sixteen 11" x 14" removable frame-ready cover reproductions. My favorite by far is Detective Comics #122 (April 1947) that shows Catwoman clawing Robin. I was surprised and delighted to see the cover of Captain Marvel Adventures #19 (January 1943) since DC Comics did not own the characters at that time.

Thrift Store Find: Two Batman Comics And One Dragon Magazine

Only two of the usual three thrift stores were open this morning. I found three items at the first place and I almost picked up something from the second place but decided against it. I found Batman #442 (December 1989) and Detective Comics #610 (January 1990) for fifty cents each. I have the first issue but not the second. In addition, I also found Best of Dragon vol. III (July 1983) for two dollars in case I ever play Dungeons & Dragons again.

The item that I passed up on was a tattered copy of Gold Key's Adam-12 since they wanted $1.50 for it. I might pick it up next week if it is still there.

Detective Comics Annual #3

George Pratt did the cover for Detective Comics Annual #3 (1990), which depicts Batman sitting on a giant mushroom with two Asian warriors about to strike with their swords. "Obligation" is a better story than the cover with Archie Goodwin as the writer, Dan Jurgens as the penciller and Dick Giordano as the inker. Batman finds himself battling the Yakuza in Gotham City before traveling to Tokyo to fight Tsunetomo, who trained a young Bruce Wayne.

Detective Comics #627

Detective Comics #627 (March 1991) is an eighty page anniversary issue celebrating Batman's six hundredth appearance. The cover artwork was down by Norm Breyfogle. The issue reprints "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate" from Detective Comics #27 (May 1939) and "The Cry of the Night is -- Kill!" from Detective Comics #387 (May 1969). Two new versions of "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate" is also included. The first was written by Marv Wolfman, penciled by Jim Aparo and inked by Mike DeCarlo. The second was written by Alan Grant, penciled by Norm Breyfogle and inked by Adrienne Roy. A two-page pin up featuring Batman, his supporting cast and rogues gallery is included in the back of the issue.
