Black Canary: Best of the Best #4-6

Happy Mother's Day and we continue with a look at the Black Canary: Best of the Best mini-series from DC Comics. Issue four has a great cover featuring Dinah Lance aka Black Canary kissing Oliver Queen aka Green Arrow. The issue starts with Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern talking and having a beer with Oliver. The fight between Lady Shiva and Black Canary continues with round four. Ted Grant aka Wildcat is taken away in an ambulance after being beaten by Lady Shiva. There is a flashback with him introducing a young Dinah to Oliver in his gym and it did not go smoothly. In another flashback, Dinah is having shots with her mom as they talk about Ollie.

Both Black Canaries are in their costumes on the cover of issue five. This issue starts off with a flashback of the mother in a hospital bed with her daughter sitting nearby in a chair. In the present, found five of the battle between Lady Shiva and Black Canary starts. Flashback to both Black Canaries in costumes talking after taking down a purse snatcher. There are some great flashback scenes at the hospital. The first being Dinah and Ollie hugging in the waiting room. The second shows her hugging her mom in the hospital room.

The sixth and final issue of Black Canary: Best of the Best mini-series starts with Vandal Savage visiting the young Dinah in the hospital. She tells him that her mother is dying. They talk about his cure for her and how she has to take a dive in the sixth round. The fight between Lady Shiva and Black Canary continue with the former pulling the blonde wig off the latter. There is a flashback of young Dinah talking to herself and losing it. The end of the fight is epic but so is the aftermath.

Black Canary: Best of the Best #1-3

DC Comics released Black Canary: Best of the Best in November 2024. The following ad was in that issue and promised Lady Shiva vs. Black Canary.

Lady Shiva does start fighting Black Canary in the first issue. What surprised me the most was that the original Black Canary also appears.

Issue two continues the fight between Lady Shiva and Black Canary with flashbacks of the latter being trained by her mother. There are also flashbacks of a young Dinah when her mother was active as Black Canary. We also get to see her dad, Larry Lance, who is a cop.

Issue three opens with Ted Grant aka Wildcat being interviewed ringside. He has also been in Black Canary's fight with Lady Shiva. Batman pops up in a flashback and becomes Dinah's sparring partner. Green Arrow and Vandal Savage appears in another flashback. In the present day, Ted Grant attacks Lady Shiva in the ring when Black Canary goes down.

Countdown to Halloween 2024 Day 15: DC vs. Vampires: World War V #3

The cover of DC vs. Vampires: World War V #3 features Damian Wayne as vampire Robin fighting vampire Captain Marvel with the help of Batman, who is supposed to be dead. The issue opens up with vampire Scott and Barda then shifts to vampire Wonder Woman fighting Green Lantern Alfred. We then see vampires Aquaman and Gorilla Grodd having their discussion interrupted by a mysterious woman. The scene shifts again to Green Arrow and his merry band consisting of Zealot, Killer Croc, Wildcat and Black Canary capturing starving vampires and trying to question them. The scene shifts to Ghost-Maker reporting in as he tries to find Mister Miracle. Then we shift back to Green Arrow and friends as the questioning goes south.

Finally, we get to Robin and his army of vampires attacking a semi-truck. They get a big surprise as vampires Wonder Girl, Captain Marvel and Raven fly out of the truck's trailer and attack. They are joined by vampire Batwoman, who sacrifices herself. There is an interlude with Black Canary talking with John Constantine. We then switch back to an injured Damian as he is joined by Batman, who unmasks and reveals who he really is. Unfortunately, we have to wait until next issue to find out who is wearing the Batsuit this time. Yeah, there is a lot going on in this issue and it's pretty fast paced.

The backup story features Bat-Mite as Geo-Force's new sidekick. That doesn't last long and he searches for a new superhero to annoy. He ends up being Afred-Mite.

Meanwhile, Krampus has Robin locked in a cage in a place called the Gnome Hall. Wonder Woman, Green Lantern Jo Mullein and Hawkgirl arrive to help Batman and the gang. Countdown to Christmas 2023 Day 20: Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight #3 Cover

Hawkgirl and Wonder Woman are on the cover of Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight #3 from DC Comics. This makes for a great Women Wednesday post for Christmas. The issue starts with Hawkgirl, Green Lantern Jo Mullein and Wonder Woman fighting Harpies in London. Then the scene switches to Blue Beetle meeting up with Superman, Batman, Nightwing, Batgirl, Black Canary, Green Arrow, Robin and Miss Martian. Yes, this is starting to feel more like a Justice League book at this point. They are expecting Santa Claus to show up but Peppermint Jon, a Huldufolk aka an elf, shows up instead. He takes them to Norway via a portal where Santa is fighting a sea serpent named Gandr. Superman punches the beast but is excited to meet Santa. He helps him lead the beast to the secret valley while Peppermint Jon teleports the other superheroes to Greenland ahead of them. They find Krampus and attack before Santa and Superman arrive. Superman gets possessed and attacks the others before Krampus teleports away with Robin. More monsters show up thanks to Superman destroying a glacier. This sets up the next and final issue due out next week.

Miss Martin, Green Arrow and Black Canary appears to help Batman, Robin, Batgirl and NIghtwing fight the vampire-like Draug. Zatanna is still in a coma-like state and Santa's helpers are still looking for a special flower. A surprise guest star also shows up to help at the end.

Women Wednesday: Birds of Prey 2023 #1-3 Covers

I didn't pay much attention to the new Birds of Prey #1 that came out in September from DC Comics. Maybe it was because the new team consists of Black Canary, Batgirl (the Cassandra Cain version), Harley Quinn, Big Barda and Zealot (you remember her from WildC.A.T.S. right?). Dinah gathers the women together in order to find her sister, Sin. John Constantine shows up in Birds of Prey #2 to help out Dinah and King Shark shows up towards the end. What really drew me into the series is the cover of #3 because it has that very worn and used look to it plus the Birds look to be facing Wonder Woman. She does appear within the issue along with Green Arrow, who was last seen at the beginning of the first issue.

Birds of Prey #3 came out today and I realized that I had not posted about the Birds of Prey since 2014.

Ollie's Comic Book Grab Bag

On my first visit to Ollie's last month, I discovered a bunch of comic book grab bags. I couldn't resist picking up a ten pack for $6.99 that supposedly has a retail value of $35. The front of the bag has the following text:

"A variety mix of 10 classic comic books!"

"Featuring Marvel, DC, Archie, Mirage, etc."

"Supreme Marketing 126 Shove St Box 9 Fall River, MA 02724"

The picture below shows the back of one of the comics that features an ad for warnerarchive.com (the site redirects to warnerbros.com now) that shows Batman now on blu-ray, Batman: The Brave and the Bold the complete first season now on blue-ray (Aquaman shown), Legends of the Superheroes tv special from 1979 (I still need to get that one) and Batman: The Brave and the Bold the complete second season coming soon (Batman is shown with Green Arrow and Blue Beetle). The comic didn't actually come that way in the bag but I didn't want to show the cover just yet. I will be posting the comic covers over the next ten days.

There is nothing on the back of the bag. I don't know when I'll be back at Ollie's again but I will pick up at least another comic book grab bag if they still have them.

Movie Monday: Batman Unlimited: Animal Instincts

I picked up the Batman Unlimited: Animal Instints DVD at the local Dollar Tree back in May of this year. I watched it a few weeks ago but never got around to posting about it here until now. This is actually the first entry to the Batman Unlimited series (Batman Unlimited: Mechs Vs Monsters is the sequel). Roger Craig Smith is Batman, Chris Diamantopoulos is Green Arrow and Will Friedle is Nightwing. I actually enjoyed watching Silverback and Cheetah more than the good guys. The animated movie is kids friendly but even adults will enjoy it too. Special features include two episodes of The Brave and The Bold cartoon series.

Doctor Moongem Meets Green Arrow and Green Lantern

As Doctor Moongem in DC Univers Online, I teamed up with Green Arrow and Green Lantern. The three of us faced Spectre, who had lost his humanity. It turned out that Eclipso was behind it and we had to defeat him too.

Batman Unlimited: Mechs Vs Mutants DVD

Batman Unlimited: Mechs Vs Mutants is the 2015 sequel to Batman Unlimited: Animal Instincts, which I have not seen. I found the dvd a few weeks ago at the local Dollar Tree. Batman is voice by Roger Craig Smith while the Joker is voiced by Troy Baker. Other superheroes that appear include Green Arrow, Nightwing, Red Robin and Cyborg while Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Clayface, Scarecrow, Silver Banshee and Solomon Grunddy are other supervillains that appear. This is more kid friendly than the last few animated movies based on characters from DC Comics that I have watched lately. The special feature is the Batman: The Brave & The Bold episode titled "Night of the Batmen".

Sexy Sunday: Bombshells Black Canary

Here is Black Canary on the alternate Bombshells cover to Green Arrow #43 (October 2015) from DC Comics:
Alternate Bombshells cover to Green Arrow #43 from DC comics featuring Black Canary
Having her as a singer makes sense and I love that she is still wearing her fishnet stockings. Of course, she has tattoo on her left forearm. I also like that her band is called the Birds of Prey and she they perform "Hawks and Doves in Love." I would love this as a pinup poster on my wall.

Convergence: Green Arrow #1

Convergence: Green Arrow #1 (June 2015) is titled "Father and Son" and I find it interesting because Convergence #2 also dealt with relationships between fathers and sons (Dick and Tommy Grayson; Thomas and Bruce Wayne).
Cover of Convergence: Green Arrow #1 from DC Comics
Oliver has been patrolling pre-zero hour Metropolis on his motorcycle.

Connor Hawke has been running a sanctuary for those needing help since the dome went down. He finds a trick green arrow, which means that Oliver is in the city. Connor shoots flare arrows to get Green Arrow's attention when he needs help to fight a hate gang ready to kill those at the sanctuary.
Page 10 of Convergence: Green Arrow #1 from DC Comics
Green Arrow is shocked to find out that Connor Hawke is his son by Sandra Hawke aka Moonday. The two are teleported and find themselves facing the Kingdom Come versions of Dinah Lance Queen and her daughter, Olivia Queen aka Black Canary III.

Seven Soldiers of Victory Returns in Convergence

The Seven Soldiers of Victory aka the Law's Legionnaires returns to DC Comics in Convergence: World's Finest according to Levitz Bids Farewell to Seven Soldiers and Scribbly Jibbet in Convergene: World's Finest. Paul Levitz wrote the issue while Joe Rubenstein and Shannon Wheeler provided the artwork. The group will consist of Vigilante, Crimson Avenger, Star-Spangled Kid, Stripsey, Shining Knight, Green Arrow and Speedy (Wing appears to be missing from this version).
Cover of Convergence: World's Finest from DC Comics
I find it odd that they would be appearing in the World's Finest issue instead of Leading Comics, which was the golden age comic where the various superheroes first debuted as the Seven Soldiers of Victory.

Yes, Scribbly Jibbet, who first appeared in All-American Comics #1 (1939), also returns again in the issue.

DC Comics Pulls Joker Variant Cover For Batgirl #41

The latest big news in the comic world is that Rafael Albuquerque asked DC Comics to pull Joker variant cover that he did for Batgirl #41 after getting death threats. I have read The Killing Joke years ago and I'm not a big fan of it. While I personally don't like the subject matter, I'm against censorship and bullying so here is the cover art:
Joker variant cover of Batgirl #41 by Rafael Albuquerque
I'm more surprised that no one has bitched about the naked Joker that Bill Sienkiewicz did for Green Arrow #41 even though his privates are covered:

New Costumes For Flash and Green Arrow Too

Yesterday, I posted about how Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and Green Lantern are getting new costumes in June. Looks like Flash and Green Arrow are receiving new looks as well in #41 of their own titles.

I'm not really digging Flash's armor boots but the rest looks cool:

Oliver's pants looks a little odd but that just may be me:
