Henry Cavill To Be Superman

The big news today is that British actor Henry Cavill is set to be Superman in the next movie. He is best known for his role on Showtime's The Tudors. Zack Snyder is the director and Christopher Nolan is the producer of the new movie that is set for a December 2012 release.

Thrift Store Find: Zachary Quinto As Spock Action Figure

I found a Zachary Quinto as Spock action figure at a local thrift store yesterday afternoon for fifty cents. He is six inches tall and came without any accessories.

The most oddest thing about him is that you can remove his shirt but not his sleeves.

Silver Streak At Superhero City

I will admit that I have not been playing Facebook's Superhero City online game everyday like I should so you could imagine my surprise when I had seen that Silver Streak was up for sale as a rare movement ability. He is the mount of the legendary Texas Ranger. Yes, the William Tell Overture is now playing in my head.

Women Wednesday: Sue Storm Backhands Namor

Yeah, I like a woman that pushes back when she has had enough. Sue Storm aka the Invisible Woman backhands Namor the Sub-Mariner with a wicked left that just happens to be encased in her force field. She gave him the smack down in Marvel's Fantastic Four #587 (March 2011).

Proof That Batman Cheats At The Races

The cover by Chris Burnham for Batman Inc. #6 on sale April 20, 2011 shows Batman riding his bat-cycle while Man-of-Bats rides a bison and Red Raven rides a horse. You know who is going to win this race.

TFAW Grab Bag #41: The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite #1

James Jean did the cover of this version of Dark Horse's The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite #1 (September 2007). This is a strange mix of steampunk and superheroes. Dr. Reginald Hargreeves aka the Monocle collects, er, adopts seven of forty-three extraordinary children. He is the inventor of several items including the Mobile Umbrella Communicator and a space alien. Ten years later, the children battle the zombie robot Gustave Eiffel, who is controlling his Tower. They are given numbers instead of names like Number One, who is the leader. Twenty years later they reunite after the death of the Monocle. Number One is now known as Spaceboy and the rest have actual names. I would like to read the rest of this limited series. Unfortunately, I received six copies of this issue from TFAW.
Cover of The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite #1 from Dark Horse
This is the last of the grab bag comics from TFAW. As you can tell, I did not fare very well with the fifty issues from Dark Horse. I can see two or three copies of the same issue but getting six or eight issues was ridiculous.

TFAW Grab Bag #40: Star Wars: Underworld - The Yavin Vassilika #3, #4 and #5

The variant of Dark Horse's Star Wars: Underworld - The Yavin Vassilika #3 (February 2001) features a photo of Harrison Ford as Han Solo. The adventure is fun but I am not crazy about the interior art by Carlos Meglia. I received eight copies of this issue in the grab bag from TFAW.
Photo cover of Star Wars: Underworld - The Yavin Vassilika #3 from Dark Horse
I also received one copy of Star Wars: Underworld - The Yavin Vassilika #4 (April 2001). Shame that Andrew Robinson and Dave Stewart only did the cover artwork.

I also received six copies of the photo cover variant of #4.

Finally, I received one copy of Star Wars: Underworld - The Yavin Vassilika #5 (June 2001). I am not a big fan of the cover by Carlos Meglia.

Vintage DC Comics 2010 Calendar

I managed to snag me a Vintage DC Comics 2010 Calender from Swag Bucks. I know the year is over but there are sixteen 11" x 14" removable frame-ready cover reproductions. My favorite by far is Detective Comics #122 (April 1947) that shows Catwoman clawing Robin. I was surprised and delighted to see the cover of Captain Marvel Adventures #19 (January 1943) since DC Comics did not own the characters at that time.

TFAW Grab Bag #39: Star Wars: Starfighter - Crossbones #2

I received Star Wars: Starfighter - Crossbones #2 (February 2002) from TFAW as part of their grab bag comic special. This issue has Nym fighting an alien shark-like creature called the relix on the planet Maramere. I liked this issue but only needed one copy instead of the three that I received.

TFAW Grab Bag #38: Rapture #3

Mike Allred did the variant cover to Dark Horse's Rapture #3 (July 2009). From what I gather from this issue, there are Champions with broken spears. One is young woman that talks to a cloaked figure and wants to do nothing else but find her boyfriend. Meanwhile, New York City is in ruins and there is a masked preteen boy with a broken spear. He is pretty creepy for he carries his mom's head, drinks booze and makes others worship him. There are also cannibals running around. Pretty weird comic book so I like it. What I dislike is that I have three copies of the same issue.

TFAW Grab Bag #37: Buffy The Vampire Slayer #17 and #20

Today's grab bag from TFAW will also serve as this week's Women Wednesday. Jeff Matsuda did the cover artwork for Dark Horse's Buffy The Vampire Slayer #17 Valentine's Day Edition (Purple Foil Logo Variant Cover) with a cover date of January 2000. Like the Angel #3 Valentines Day Edition (Purple Foil Logo Variant Cover) that I showed here, there is nothing romantic happening within this issue. Buffy does fight a vampire lookalike. I received six copies of this issue.
Cover of Buffy The Vampire Slayer #17 from Dark Horse
I do like the photographic cover to Dark Horse's Buffy The Vampire Slayer #20 (April 2000) mostly because of Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz. This issue finds the pair sharing their psychic link while on the brink of death from some demon that steal souls. I received four copies of this issue.
Cover of Buffy The Vampire Slayer #20 from Dark Horse
The only issue of this series that I had before receiving the grab bag comics was the photo cover of #37 (June 2003). However, I do have all four issues of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Haunted mini-series. To be honest, my favorite characters from the tv series are Willow and Tara. That is why I have the Willow and Tara one-shot and the Willow and Tara: Wilderness two parter.

TFAW Grab Bag #36: Buffy/Angel #1/2

TFAW sent the comic cover version of Dark Horse's Buffy The Vampire Slayer/Angel #1/2 that was a freebie that came with an issue of Wizard in 2000. The limited edition versopm has a photo cover. While I like the self-contained story, I really did not need six copies.

TFAW Grab Bag #35: Angel #3

Today starts the look at the fifty Dark Horse grab bag comics that I purchased at TFAW (Things From Another World). First up is Angel #3 Valentines Day Edition (Purple Foil Logo Variant Cover) with a cover date of January 2000. He fights a Lamia and there is no romance in this issue. I ended up with six copies of the same issue despite the fact that there is a normal cover, a photographic version and red foil logo cover. Jeff Matsuda did the cover artwork.

Thrift Store Find: The Incredible Hulk Video Novel

I found a copy of The Incredible Hulk: A Video Novel from 1979 at a local thrift store yesterday for fifty cents. The book has actual color pictures from the pilot episode of the tv series starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno. The Kenneth Johnson screenplay was edited and adapted by Roy Thomas.

I really wish that particular thrift store would go back to using the mall round price stickers instead of putting tape on the long price tag. At least, they did not put it on the front cover.

Thrift Store Find: Justice League Mission Vision The Flash Motorcycle

When the Flash wants to go at a slower pace, he jumps on his yellow and red bike. I found a loose Justice League Mission Vision The Flash motorcycle at a local thrift store this morning for a dollar. The grappling missile is missing and it does not go anywhere. The lightning bolts on the back wheel does fold down and out but I think it looks cooler with them up. His arms can flip up for hands free driving. The windshield is in pretty bad condition but at least the toy was played with and I cannot complain at that price.

TFAW Grab Bag #34: Red Herring #6

Philip Bond did the cover art and interior pencils on WildStorm's Red Herring #6 (March 2010). From what I can tell from this issue, the mini-series is about a redheaded con man and conspiracies. Not only was this the last issue of the series but it is also the last of the independent comic grab bag from TFAW.

Red Herring #6 also has a five page sneak peek at Vertigo's Joe The Barbarian.

TFAW Grab Bag #33: Gen13 #33

Rafael Albuquerque and Randy G. Mayor did the cover for WildStorm's Gen13 #33 (February 2010). Believe it or not but this is the only issue of the series that I have ever read. I know the team thanks mostly to articles and previews in Wizard. This is an interesting issue that does provide a score card of sorts to all the characters since members of Gen13 and Gen14 are mixed together.

I am going to break down and get the Superman/Gen13 trade paperback someday.

TFAW Grab Bag #32: Dante's Inferno #2

Diego Latorre did the cover and interior artwork for WildStorm's Dante's Inferno #2 (March 2010). The six issue series was based on the video game from Electronic Arts that is loosely based on the classic poem. I never played the game but I have read the poem. I would like to pick up the rest of this series after reading this issue.

TFAW Grab Bag #31: The Authority #18 and #19

My only exposure to WildStorm's The Authority were in the pages of Wizard so it was nice to have two issues of the latest series as part of the grab bag from TFAW. George Perez did the cover for The Authority #18 (March 2010).
Mark Bagley and Trevor Scott did the cover art for The Authority #19 (April 2010).
Cover of The Authority #19 from WildStorm
Pretty good issues but I needed a score card to keep all the characters straight. All of the characters from the WildStorm universe unite but only a few escape Earth with a bunch of normal people on an alien space craft. Members from StormWatch, WildCats and Gen13 form the new Authority.

TFAW Grab Bag #30: Sky Pirates of Neo Terra #4

Camilla d'Errico was the cover artist as well as the interior penciller and inker for Image's Sky Pirates of Neo Terra #4 (January 2010). From my understanding, this five issue series was based on the fantasy video game for the Nintendo DS and Wii. I would have never picked up this series on my own so it was a nice surprise from TFAW.

TFAW Grab Bag #29: God Complex #3

Daniel Berman and Michael Avon Oeming did the cover for Image's God Complex #3 (February 2010). They also wrote the seven issue series about the Greek gods living in the modern world. Medusa makes an appearance before Paul the hero makes an reference to Raiders of the Lost Arc.

TFAW Grab Bag #28: G-Man: Cape Crisis #5

Chris Giarrusso did the cover for Image's G-Man: Cape Crisis #5 (January 2010), which is also the last issue of the limited series. He also wrote the story and drew the interior art. I like this issue and would like to see more. This was a pleasant surprise in the grab bag from TFAW.
