Mr. Terrific: Year One #1

Out this week is Mr. Terrific: Year One #1 (2025) featuring the secret origin of summer's breakout superhero (he's in the upcoming Superman movie). Brilliant young inventor Michael Holt’s life was destined for greatness, yet everything screeched to a halt when his wife Paula and unborn son were killed in a car accident. The Holts once shared ambitious dreams of using their technology to help others, but after the tragedy, Michael retreats from society and sells Holt Industries to mysterious and craven tech billionaire Athena Prescott. The domino effect of Michael’s actions set off an explosive chain of events that take a not-so-ordinary man from the depths of despair to the heights of heroism. Meanwhile, in the present day, Mr. Terrific continues his research into what became of Darkseid after the events of the DC All-In Special (yeah, it would help if you have read this). He comes to realize that his past and the present might be inextricably linked.

Hot Wheels Batman 5-Pack 2024

Today was my lucky day for I found this Hot Wheels Batman 5-pack from 2024 at the local Dollar General. I have not seen this 5-pack at the local Walmart's, so I quickly grabbed this.  There are two batmobiles, two villain cars and a cop car. Here's the front featuring all five Hot Wheels die-cast cars:

Here's the back featuring Batman reaching out for you:

Mr. Freeze is represented by the Sir Ominous car with a bluish silver color. The Batman Batmobile has gold look to it. The photos below don't do the paint jobs justice.

The Penguin is represented by the Fast Felion car painted metalflake purple. The Gotham City Police car is painted metalflake gray '11 Dodge Charger R/T (to me it looks brownish).

Finally, there is the chrome Batmobile from 2019.

Women Wednesday: Betty and Veronica Friends Forever: Spy Girls #1

The cover of Betty and Veronica Friends Forever: Spy Girls #1 features Betty, Veronica, Mad Doctor Doom, Chester and Medusa Doom. The first story is titled "Medusa Gone Wild" with Agent B and Agent V getting the drop on Medusa Doom after locking up her father, Mad Doctor Doom. This is a new story that introduces Medusa Doom. The second story is titled "Where the Action is..." features the agents tryuing to find a missing Archie. Next is a classic B.E.T.T.Y. as the Girl from R.I.V.E.R.D.A.L.E. two part story titled "Playthings of Pearl" that finds her battling the Toymaker. Chester appears briefly in part one but ends up being a robot. Chester is usually Mad Doctor Doom's assistant, so it was odd to so little of them in this issue.

Milk & Bone Presents Superman: A Friendship Unleashed #1

Did you know that if you buy a box of Milk & Bone dog treats that you can get a free comic book featuring Superman and Krypto? The small print calls it Milk & Bone Custom Comic (July 2025) but the cover suggests Milk & Bone Presents Superman: A Friendship Unleashed #1 (sounds better right?). Of course, it's basically a movie tie-in. Shame I don't have a dog anymore so the neighbor's dog will get them.

Cool ad for the Milk & Bone box featuring Krypto:

Black Canary: Best of the Best #4-6

Happy Mother's Day and we continue with a look at the Black Canary: Best of the Best mini-series from DC Comics. Issue four has a great cover featuring Dinah Lance aka Black Canary kissing Oliver Queen aka Green Arrow. The issue starts with Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern talking and having a beer with Oliver. The fight between Lady Shiva and Black Canary continues with round four. Ted Grant aka Wildcat is taken away in an ambulance after being beaten by Lady Shiva. There is a flashback with him introducing a young Dinah to Oliver in his gym and it did not go smoothly. In another flashback, Dinah is having shots with her mom as they talk about Ollie.

Both Black Canaries are in their costumes on the cover of issue five. This issue starts off with a flashback of the mother in a hospital bed with her daughter sitting nearby in a chair. In the present, found five of the battle between Lady Shiva and Black Canary starts. Flashback to both Black Canaries in costumes talking after taking down a purse snatcher. There are some great flashback scenes at the hospital. The first being Dinah and Ollie hugging in the waiting room. The second shows her hugging her mom in the hospital room.

The sixth and final issue of Black Canary: Best of the Best mini-series starts with Vandal Savage visiting the young Dinah in the hospital. She tells him that her mother is dying. They talk about his cure for her and how she has to take a dive in the sixth round. The fight between Lady Shiva and Black Canary continue with the former pulling the blonde wig off the latter. There is a flashback of young Dinah talking to herself and losing it. The end of the fight is epic but so is the aftermath.

Black Canary: Best of the Best #1-3

DC Comics released Black Canary: Best of the Best in November 2024. The following ad was in that issue and promised Lady Shiva vs. Black Canary.

Lady Shiva does start fighting Black Canary in the first issue. What surprised me the most was that the original Black Canary also appears.

Issue two continues the fight between Lady Shiva and Black Canary with flashbacks of the latter being trained by her mother. There are also flashbacks of a young Dinah when her mother was active as Black Canary. We also get to see her dad, Larry Lance, who is a cop.

Issue three opens with Ted Grant aka Wildcat being interviewed ringside. He has also been in Black Canary's fight with Lady Shiva. Batman pops up in a flashback and becomes Dinah's sparring partner. Green Arrow and Vandal Savage appears in another flashback. In the present day, Ted Grant attacks Lady Shiva in the ring when Black Canary goes down.

Superhero Saturday: Killer Kobra: The Hunt Begins

When I first saw the cover for Killer Kobra: The Hunt Begins #1, I thought DC Comics was rebooting their super villainous Kobra group. Instead, Zenoscope Entertainment is introducing a new "shadowy vigilante that strikes with the fury of a thousand venoms." Basically, he's a monster hunter that uses the cobra school of kung fu.

The issue actually starts with a group of college students hiking in the Ozarks during their Spring Break. They are attacked and killed by a Bigfoot. The issue then switches to Philadepia (yes, that's how they spell it), where Killer Kobra out of costume is sparring with a talking mongoose named Chopstick. He looks at a photo of his parents before getting a call about the Bigfoot attack. The action shifts to a mysterious man ordering a mysterious woman agent to bring in or eliminate Kobra and Chopstick. We switch back to the hero and his animal sidekick who finds trouble in a roadhouse in the Ozarks. He easily wins the fight with his mastery of Cobra Kung Fu but is chased off by the bar owner with a rifle. The pair make their way to the campsite but is attacked by the Bigfoot. Killer Kobra, now in full costume, does his fancy martial arts moves against the huge creature, who retreats. He and Chopsticks chases the monster in the woods in a comical chase scene before the issue literally ends on a cliffhanger.

This was a pretty good first issue and I love the running gag with Chopsticks being mistaken for a ferret. I highly recommend reading Killer Kobra: The Hunt Begins #1 if you like a little humor with your martial arts superhero.
